Meningococcal infection is caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis.It is a serious bacterial disease that is primarily transmitted through direct contact with the respiratory secretions, including nasal and throat secretions, of infected individuals or carriers. The incubation period commonly 3 to 4 days. Most infections are caused by serogroups A, B, C, W, and Y. In Hong Kong, serogroup B meningococcus accounts for approximately 50% of all cases. The disease can deteriorate rapidly within 24 hours, leading to severe complications such as neck stiffness, bruising (purpuric rash), or shock.
